Listening note:
CA.
(oh I can’t get the learning guide because I didn’t register!)
no use car nerve of that guy
let her go because he had an appointment
running over her cat was just an accident
count himself lucky
cut this short
but I really have to get going~
I really want to hear all about it, but, natural calls
A & K
Intension: you plan to do something
The nerve: sth. Which will make sb. Mad
To let you go: End a phone call or end a conversation (I need to go)
To run over: Car Goes over something
Bull: not true, a lie
Comment:
It’s a pity that I can’t try the learning guide, but it’s ok cuz I can still use other function.
First, the script is good because it can not only offer beginner the context to check up but also can offer vocabulary list for advanced learners.
Second, I noticed that if you just listen the on-line version, you can’t finish the whole lesson; you have to download the podcast version and play it, then you can listen the whole lesson on your computer.
Third, the category function is really good because you can click the link of each field and then the page will show you all topics which related to this field. And that can save your time to search all the topics, especially in today’s busy world.
In addition, it’s sweet that it offer the step, the guide for beginners who don’t really know how to upload the files into their electronic products.

I think, as an advanced English learner, it can offer you more choice to learn new words in different field because we tend to focus some words in some specific fields and forget that learning should be wild. For example, maybe I prefer words about travel than words about medicine; however, I truly should at least learn some basic health and medicine words in case I will face them one day!

The international conference held by AFL Department

This conference was held by our department, by our students!

I'm glad it's over now because I saw my school sister was getting more and more tired and her face looked paler and paler. That showed that how they worked hard on this "big" activity.

Besides this, I think I also learnt something from this conference although I responsibled for only one morning. During that four hours (from 7:30-11:30), I not only had to obey whatever the leader said, remember the whole procedure of registeration (because I'm in the registeration group), and also I had to forget my tiredness and forced myself smiling to all the visitors and answered their questions politely. All these things seemed simple but in fact, it was not.

When there were a lot of people coming inside at the same time, all of our group members had to finish everything in a hurry to prevent from guests' impatience. Asking names of guests, finding the name from the lists, finding the name tag from a big-name-tag mess, and then giving them their name tags, lunch coupon, and the conference information as well. The most important thing I had learnt was that no matter how I felt at that time, I just couldn't show my emotion but I had to be a professional receptionist. What I represented was the first impression of our department, of our school; I knew this was really important, so I did my best to satisfied our guests' requests.

I was not like other people participanted in the conference, I was only be there half day; although I didn't stay for a long time, I also experienced something that I must be really aware of when I step into the real work place. That was: attitude and responsibility. I think that is my first lesson to learn before I enter my new company!

and ps. , I also saw that to hold such a big conference, there are so many groups need to work together to finish all these difficult challenges. That made me understood how important group working is!

ps II. , I also realized that the immediate reaction is vital because there will be anything happened in anytime. For example, Bava and I met a man who said that he thought that he must definitely be in the first two hundred signing up. And the first two hundred guests could get the lunch coupon. He insisted that he could get the coupon. At the beginning Bava and I didn't know how to deal with this situation, but after a while, I just came up with an idea which was that since he was so confirmed and the amount of guests was far from the target, then why not just gave him the coupon and be ready for the next guest? After making this decision, we both felt relaxed and happy. There was no damage of the whole procedure, and also we made the guest satisfied. Although I didn't know if it was right to do so, I learnt to train my immediate reaction from time to time.

NTNU CCRS
I like the way it counts the frequency about the collocation. That way I can easily know what word appears most with the target word. And because this is also a corpus, the way people use the target word can be easily find out, too. In addition, the interface of this corpus is easy to use and this is quiet important for language learners. Unfortunately, I can not see the whole context of each datum (there is no link on each datum).

Tango Verb-Noun Collocation
The interface is also very easy and clear, but I think it is quiet hard for beginner to use because they need to know what are VN, VNP, VPN.... first. But for advanced learners, they can find out what they need quickly. For me, I think it is ok to use it. And as I use it, I learn new phrase now :D

In my opinion, it is hard to tell whether a corpus or a dictionary is better because I'll use them both to help me improve my English. If I need to know the definition of a word, I just look it up in a dictionary, and then I can use collocation corpus to help me go further learning more about how to use that word.

The difficulty I face is to analyze the data I get from corpus. For example, the assignment last time is using corpus to make difference between the words "big" and "large." Although I read my data for many times, I still can't tell and generalize them. But after Sally's explaining, I think I can try some words next time and maybe I will progress a lot!

A Big Car Or A Large Class?

What is the difference between big and large? After learning English for so many years, I can't image that I've never thought this question before and I was surprised that I can't answer this question from my experiences.

Fortunately, we have one thing called concordancer. I use both VLC Concordancer and NTNU Web Concordancer to search and analyze the difference between these two words.

Here I got some conclusion:
1. Large is mostly used to describe the quantity of things or something we call "invisible."
ex. a large chunk of Andorra / the only large brand

2. Big is mostly used to describe things which are more visible.
ex. a big city / the big guns

Beside this, I hardly to find other differences @"@ I'm now sinking in the "big and large" pond~~~~~~

It's time to go to other people's blog to check more details about this question!

Feedback for this week- DICTIONARY

This week we talked about dictionaries. Although I've been an English major student for many years, I still got poor idea and knowledge of dictionaries. I know as an English learner, I need to use dictionary more, especially the paper ones. But I am really a very lazy girl that I'd rather choose on-line dictionary to save my time. As a result, I can not prove my English well by the help of dictionaries. Once I got a chance to get closer to my English-English dictionary; that was when I was preparing for my transfer examination. My teacher ask us all to use Collins CoBuild as more times as we can. He said, "The one who use this dictionary more often, he or she will get more chance to enter top school." I was encouraged a lot; thus, I use that book almost every time when I face English(whatever writing homework or reading novels). Using that dictionary did really help me a lot, my English obviously become better than before at that time. Unfortunately, after I entered NTUST, I quit this good habit and I really feel sorry for this thing. I know I really need to pick it up again one day, asap, and after this class I am sure that I will!

In this week's class I knew a variety of dictionaries that I've never seen before. I tried all the links on teacher's board and here's my comment:

1. I prefer the Tech Terms Distionary because nowadays we live in such "tech" world and we will face a lot of vocabularies about computer science. This dictionary can help us get a clear idea soon after you press the enter button.

2. As for learners dictionaries (paper ones), I still like my own "Collins CoBuild" because it did help me a lot. By using a limited amount of words, I can learn more new words. And for the on-line ones, I like Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary better because I prefer the setting.

3. Dictionary.com is a cool website! Because it can not only offer you the on-line dictionary, but also you can practice your English on the website. I played the crossword puzzle but it was kind difficult for me @"@; however, it was still interesting for me to guess those words!!

4. I think OneLook Dictionary Search is also cool because when you look up a new word, it will not only tell you the meaning about one field but also you can know what the word mean in other field. It is really helpful and can gain English vocabularies I believe.

5. The most impressive one: Merriam-Webster's New Online Visual Dictionary! I love picture dictionary a lot! The pictures in this on-line dictionary are nice and I really like them. I can learn a variety of word through those lovely pictures and I am sure as long as I have time, I will try all those themes.

And now I'm going to add my favorite dictionaries into my BLOG !!

Self-Introduction

Hey there, ^^
I'm Peggy, I've just had my birthday celebration week!
I love reading, singing, watching TV, listening to music, and taking trips.
It's my last semester at NTUST and I'll try to find a proper way for myself.

For my short-term goal; I hope I can pass the ITI entrance exam and take the tough training.

Recently, I started to go to concerts, watch some exhibition, and visit a lot of places in Taipei (maybe in other cities some other day.) I love this kind of life style and this is the way I make myself feel relaxed.

If you feel lots of pressure from your works, I recommand that you can go outside and do something relaxable like me. I believe you will get your power again and do much better on your works. :D
